Sharyn's
singer/songwriting career began in 1986 after going through with a
'dare' to sing at a church out of town.
Her first gig was
in a jazz and blues cabaret called "Junk 'n Jive". J&J, a 3 piece
group comprising of 2 female vocalists and a male pianist/vocalist.
It was all about harmony and entertainment. They packed houses in
Cape Town for a year before moving to Johannesburg where they played
for another year. Sharyn felt that J&J had given her excellent vocal
training and was an amazing experience but that it was time to move
on.
She sang lead vocals
in various rock cover bands over the next 5 years and backed a couple
of original bands both live and in the studio: Mr. Nobody, The Diamond
Dogs and The Genuines to name a few. Along with Junk 'n Jive and also
as a guest artist, Sharyn had the opportunity to make several
TV appearances.
Sharyn moved to the U.S. in '92 to pursue her music. Along with
some fellow South Africans she started a band called "The Untamed". They
became fairly well known at the Jersey shore, but after having a child,
Sharyn and her family decided to move back to SA. for a couple of
years.
Back home, work
was mostly in rock cover bands and jingle work. Sharyn, who is also
a graphic designer, was hired as production designer for a retro-rock
show called "Roll Over Beethoven". While painting backdrops, designing
the playbill, poster, CD cover, stage and directing the shoots, she
was hired as lead female vocalist for the show. 'Roll over Beethoven'
was a huge success and ran for 9 months to full houses at the dinner
theater 'The Pump House' (Also known as the Pizza Factory).
In 1997, Sharyn and her family returned to the US where she played in
various original and cover bands, both live and in the studio and
recorded her CD.
One of the songs
on the CD, 'On this you can rely' has been used in an independent
film called "Who the hell is Bobby Roos".
Since the release of the CD Sharyn has played and continues to play various gigs in NYC and New Jersey. Inbetween original gigs, sharyn has started singing in an acoustic duo on weekends for some fun and sanity.
